Sweden to End Acceptance of Extended Passports Starting October 2025

As of October 1, 2025, Swedish authorities will no longer recognize passports with extended validity through stamps or stickers. Individuals holding such passports are urged to apply for a new one promptly to avoid disruptions in travel or immigration processes.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, some countries faced shortages of materials for issuing new passports, leading embassies to extend passport validity by adding a stamp or sticker. This temporary measure will cease to be valid in Sweden after September 30, 2025. From October 1, the Swedish Migration Agency will not grant residence cards, residence status, or permits for studies, visits, family reunification, or work to individuals presenting extended passports. Entry into Sweden with such documents will also be prohibited.
Action Required for Affected Individuals
Those with extended passports who plan to apply for or have already applied for a residence card, residence status, entry visa, or residence permit should obtain a new passport from their country of origin or its embassy. The Swedish Migration Agency will accept extended passports only until September 30, 2025. After this date, a new passport will be required to enter Sweden, even if a permit decision is received beforehand.
Application Process Updates
The Swedish Migration Agency will contact individuals if their application requires a new passport. Applicants are advised to secure a new passport as soon as possible but to wait for agency instructions before submitting copies. For applications processed after October 1, 2025, the agency will request a new passport if one has not been provided, potentially delaying decisions.
To ensure a smooth process, affected individuals should act promptly to replace their extended passports and follow guidance from the Swedish Migration Agency.
