How to Obtain a Swedish Residence Permit to Seek Employment or Start a Business
If you’ve completed an advanced degree, Sweden offers the opportunity to apply for a residence permit that allows you to explore job opportunities or consider starting your own business. Here’s what you need to know to get started.
Eligibility Criteria for the Residence Permit
To qualify for a residence permit to seek employment or start a business in Sweden, you must meet the following requirements:
- Advanced Degree: You must have completed studies equivalent to an advanced level degree. This includes:
- A Master’s degree (60-120 credits)
- A professional degree (60-330 credits)
- A postgraduate or PhD-level degree
- Employment or Business Exploration: You must demonstrate that you plan to either seek employment or explore the potential for starting your own business in Sweden.
- Financial Support: You must be able to financially support yourself during your stay. For each month of your residence permit, you’ll need to show proof of funds equivalent to at least SEK 13,000. Additionally, you should have enough money to cover your journey home.
- Comprehensive Health Insurance: You must have valid health insurance that covers emergency and regular medical care, hospital stays, dental care, and possible repatriation for medical reasons during your entire stay in Sweden. You will need to attach the insurance terms to your application.
- Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your intended stay in Sweden. If your passport is about to expire, you’ll need to renew it before applying, as your residence permit cannot be granted for a longer period than your passport’s validity.
- Currently Outside Sweden: You must apply for the residence permit while you are outside Sweden.
Verifying Your Educational Qualifications
To confirm your educational background, you’ll need to include a letter of consent in your application. This letter authorizes the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) to contact your educational institution in your home country to verify your documents. The Swedish Migration Agency will then collaborate with UHR to assess your level of education.
