A 44-year-old man residing in Stockholm has been slapped with a hefty fine of SEK 30,000 for driving with an expired foreign driver’s license. Despite possessing an international driving license, it was revealed that the document had expired, and the individual had been living in Sweden for over a year.

The man, originally holding a New Zealand driving license, found himself in hot water when caught driving in Södermalm, Stockholm, in December of last year. The Stockholm District Court, in its judgment, ruled that since the man had been registered in Sweden for more than a year, his driving with a foreign license was deemed illegal.

Transportstyrelsen, the Swedish Transport Agency, specifies that driving licenses issued outside the European Economic Area (EEA) are no longer valid if the driver has been a resident in Sweden for more than one year. Exceptions are made for driving licenses from the United Kingdom, the Faroe Islands, Switzerland, or Japan.

The court sentenced the 44-year-old to 30 daily fines in addition to the SEK 30,000 penalty. Despite the legal repercussions, the individual denies any wrongdoing, claiming ignorance about the expiration of his driver’s license.

Transportstyrelsen underscores that driving licenses from non-EEA countries are valid for only one year of driving in Sweden, emphasizing the need for residents to stay informed about the validity of their licenses to avoid legal consequences.
