China and India topped the list for the highest number of students in Sweden
In 2023, China and India topped the list for the highest number of students granted resident permits for studies in Sweden, followed by the United States in third place. Surprisingly, two small Asian nations, Sri Lanka and Singapore, secured the fourth and fifth positions, respectively, in terms of the number of students granted residence permits for studies, according to the Migrationverket website. Approximately 54 percent of those granted residence permits were women, with almost 46 percent being men.
During the same year, more than 2,500 individuals were granted residence permits as accompanying family members of students, showing a decrease from 2,913 in 2022. Nearly 21,000 people were granted residence permits for studies in 2023, with approximately 14,000 permits being for higher education studies. The remaining permits were for studies at other levels and for accompanying family members of students.
What makes Sweden attractive for foreign students?
Can student work during studies ?
Unlike many other EU countries, Sweden has no upper limit on how much foreign students can work alongside their studies. After completing 30 credits or one semester of study, students can apply for a work permit without leaving Sweden. In 2023, approximately 1,700 former students were granted work permits.
Can students stay and work in Sweden after graduation?
Individuals who have completed higher education in Sweden can apply for a residence permit to seek employment or start their own business. Around 1,300 people were granted such a residence permit in 2023.
Additionally, individuals intending to pursue doctoral studies for a period longer than three months can apply for a residence permit for doctoral studies, which is granted for up to four years at a time.
The general rule is that permits must be applied for and granted before coming to Sweden. Those with existing permits who wish to continue studying can apply for an extension before the current permit expires, without the need to leave Sweden.
Can a co-applicant of the student work in Sweden?
Unlike in other countries, Sweden has simplified the process for co-applicants to work during their stay. Previously, students needed to hold a residence permit for studies for at least six months for the co-applicant to be eligible for a work permit. The updated assessment removes this limitation. Under the new assessment, co-applicants can obtain a work permit even if the student’s residence permit is shorter than six months
